The First Ottoman Apartments
First Impressions
Walking up to The First Ottoman Apartments in the heart of Fatih, you immediately sense you’re stepping into something special. This four-star property sits tucked away on a quiet side street, but don’t let that fool you — you’re actually in one of Istanbul’s most historically rich neighborhoods. The building itself has this wonderful blend of Ottoman-inspired architecture with modern touches that somehow doesn’t feel forced or touristy.
Location & Neighborhood
Honestly, the location is what really sold me on this place. You’re literally walking distance from the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia — I mean, we’re talking about a five-minute stroll here. But here’s what I loved most: unlike those big chain hotels right on the main tourist drag, you get to experience the real Fatih neighborhood. There’s this amazing little bakery around the corner where locals grab their morning simit, and the evening call to prayer from nearby mosques creates this incredible atmosphere. Couples seem to particularly appreciate how romantic the area becomes after sunset, which makes total sense given the cobblestone streets and historic ambiance.
The Apartment Experience
What sets this place apart is that you’re not getting a typical hotel room — you’re getting a proper apartment setup. Each unit comes with a fully equipped kitchen, which honestly saved us quite a bit of money (and let’s be real, sometimes you just want to make your own coffee). The beds here are genuinely comfortable — I’m usually pretty picky about mattresses, but I slept incredibly well every night. The apartments have this authentic Ottoman design element throughout, with beautiful textiles and traditional patterns, but everything feels fresh and well-maintained.
Breakfast & Daily Rhythms
The continental breakfast is served in a lovely communal area that feels more like someone’s elegant dining room than a hotel restaurant. You know what I appreciated? They actually have proper Turkish breakfast items alongside the usual European fare — fresh tomatoes, cucumbers, olives, and some excellent local cheeses. The staff takes time to explain different items if you’re curious, and there’s never that rushed feeling you get at bigger properties. Starting your day here, then heading out to explore the historic peninsula, creates this perfect rhythm.
Why Guests Love It
After staying here, I completely understand why recent guests rate the location so highly. You get that authentic Istanbul experience without sacrificing comfort or convenience. The combination of being in a real neighborhood while still having easy access to major sights is pretty rare. Plus, having your own space with a kitchen means you can truly settle in rather than just passing through. It’s the kind of place where you actually feel like you’re living in Istanbul for a few days rather than just visiting — and honestly, that’s exactly what makes a trip memorable.
